How to do the Salsa

salsa Now, this will be one of my favorites simply because this is one I have always wanted to learn myself. The salsa is a Latin dance, mainly energetic with innovative choreography. If you’re looking for something upbeat this may be the dance for you.

Before you begin the Salsa there are four basic steps you need to know in order to execute this dance smoothly. These include:

  1. Front to Back Salsa Basic
  2. Side Basic
  3. Back Basic
  4. Cumbia Basic (Columbian style basic

Now that we know the basic steps you’ll need we will need to understand the Salsa timings. These include:

  1. Basic Salsa Timing
  2. Core Beat Timing
  3. Full Count Timing
  4. Syncopated Timing

These different types of timings is the default in which you will arrange your basic steps that were listed above. Depending on what kind of style you are wanting to execute will depend on the type of timing you will choose for your steps.

Lastly, you will need to choose a rhythm that fits your style.

  1.  Merengue Rhythm – 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8, quick-quick-quick-quick-quick-quick-quick-quick
  2. Salsa Rhythm – 1-2-3, 5-6-7, quick-quick-slow, quick-quick-slow

You will choose the moves, timing, and rhythm that you and your partner want to begin with and you will put all of these together. Once you master the basics you are more than welcome to move on to different moves such as spins, dips, and lifts to make you a salsa master. If you would like to try out some of your salsa moves for real there is a nice spot in Little Rock that happens to do a salsa dancing night. If you have no partner, no problem! The workers there are more than welcome to help you and guide you to becoming an excellent salsa dancer. Not only will this broaden your dance horizons, but it will make for a fun night.

Until next time!
